Escape to beautiful south-west Scotland
Rowan Cottage is full of character. Tucked away down a sloping side street, it is just a short stroll to the heart of New Galloway. There you’ll find a shop, post office, café and arts centre at the CatStrand and more. Rest assured, from the moment you arrive, you can start to take things easy.
Inside the spacious cottage is bright and airy. With white walls and glass-panelled wooden doors that the light pours through. It is decorated throughout with tasteful prints and original paintings. There is excellent WiFi and oil-fired central heating throughout. So it’s nice and toasty – even in the colder months.
DOWNSTAIRS
Go up four outside steps to the entrance at the side of the property into the sun porch where there’s space to leave your coats, boots and wellies. From here one door leads to the spacious lounge and another door goes into the country style kitchen.
The kitchen
The kitchen is fully-equipped with all that you’ll need during your self-catering holiday in Scotland. There’s an electric hob and oven, fridge-freezer, microwave, air fryer, kettle, toaster, coffee machine and a cafetiere as well as a washing machine. (There’s a tumble dryer, clothes horse and washing basket in the porch). Plus there’s plenty of cutlery, crockery, glassware, utensils, pots and pans.
A welcome basket of complimentary tea, coffee, biscuits and some chocolate treats is all ready for you to tuck into if you’re feeling peckish after your journey. There’s also a table in here, ideal if you want to keep the cook of the house company or help peel the veg.
It’s also a great space to sit together and plan your next day of exploring beautiful Dumfries and Galloway.
The kitchen leads to the downstairs hallway where you can also access the lounge via a glass panelled door to your left.
The lounge
Step into the spacious lounge and you’ll find a light an airy room with French doors that lead to the sun porch and a large front-facing window. There are two large comfy sofas, so plenty of space for everyone to sit and relax in the evenings. Maybe you’ll watch a movie or catch up on your favourite drama?
There’s a smart TV with lots of Freeview channels to choose from. In addition to the kitchen table, there’s also a folded dining table in the lounge which you can pull out to eat around should you choose to dine in.
The bathroom
Back to the bright hallway, just past the stairs is the family shower room. It has a large shower along with a WC, wash basin with a mirror, heated towel rail and an electric shaver charging point. Towels are provided.
The back door is opposite the family shower door. Steps lead from here down into a small contained yard and on to the garden (which can also be accessed via a gate just past the side entrance).
Ground floor bedroom
Just past the family shower room is the ground floor double bedroom with views across the wooded riverbank. There is ample drawer space as well as a large wardrobe and full-length mirror.
So you can unpack and make yourself at home. There’s hairdryer as well – so don’t panic if you forget to pack yours.
UPSTAIRS
The stairs lead to a spacious landing where there is a desk and chair. So if one (or more) of your group is on a workcation, this is the place to set up your laptop. There’s good WiFi at Rowan Cottage so you can tick off some of your to-do list and meet those deadlines if you have to. Although you might be distracted by the beautiful views!
Immediately left as you reach the top of the stairs is the upstairs cloakroom, with a WC and washbasin.
Next to that is the first twin bedroom. Again, there is plenty of storage and a wardrobe to unpack your clothes as well as a dressing table. This bedroom has glorious views across the mature woodland garden across the burn to the fields beyond.
At the other end, to the right, is the third bedroom, another beautiful twin room. This room looks out onto the lane and has plenty of drawer space, a small wardrobe and a dressing table.
All of the beds will be made up with quality bedding, all ready for you to enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep. The tranquil setting will help with that too.
Each bedroom also has a complimentary TV, handy if some members of your group want to get some alone time whilst you’re here.
OUTSIDE
Rowan Cottage has a beautiful garden with mature fruit trees and a small pond. A stream runs past the end of the garden, with glorious views across the fields and the hills beyond. There is also a wooden bridge across the burn which takes you straight to the path onto a wonderful circular walk. Perfect if you have little ones that need to burn off some energy. Or if you’re bringing your dog(s) it’s just one of many beautiful walks you can head off on straight from the door.
Please note that the garden isn’t enclosed and the stream and pond are not fenced, so children must be supervised at all times. We also recommend you keep your dogs on a lead whilst you enjoy time in the garden.
It is wonderfully peaceful here, a truly relaxing place where hopefully you’ll see lots of wildlife too. You might even spot a heron as there is a heronry in the mature evergreens across the yard. There is garden furniture, so you can sit and enjoy your morning coffee to start your day. Then spend your evenings outside with a warming mug of hot chocolate (or maybe your favourite tipple) watching the sun go down.
